The sun can be a blessing for the skin, but it can also cause damage if we are not careful. How do you find the right balance?
Being outside in nature and exposing your body to sunlight is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. In our modern society with mostly urban occupations, we often get outside much less than generations before us. However, scientific research has shown that exposure to sunlight protects health and increases our life expectancy. Besides the well-known UVA and UVB radiation, sunlight also contains infrared light which activates our mitochondria; the power plants in our cells. This promotes the self-healing capacity of the cells, which positively influences various processes in our body.
Of course, it is important to enjoy the sun responsibly to reap all the health benefits on the one hand, but also to avoid unnecessary damage on the other.
How do you do this?
- Start exposure early in spring, when the sun is not yet as strong, so that you can gradually build up your tolerance.
- When you go out into the sun, expose as much skin surface as possible, not just your face and arms.
- Prevent your skin from burning by avoiding too long exposure to the sun.
- Wear light, protective clothing and headgear when spending longer periods in the sun.
- Pamper your skin regularly with moisturizing creams that nourish and protect.
