The skin on the face is more sensitive than that of the rest of the body and thus needs proper care. Many impurities and skin complaints can be prevented by regular, careful facial cleansing.
Properly cleansed skin glows, is sufficiently hydrated and has few clogged pores or pimples. Skin that is badly (or excessively) cleansed looks dull, dry or, on the contrary, very oily and restless.
Cleansing is therefore the first and most important step in your daily skincare routine. The care products you apply afterwards can then do their best work. But what is a good facial cleanser?
Cleansing with water alone?
Your skin encounters dirt from outside, such as exhaust fumes and dust, on a daily basis. In addition, the skin itself also produces waste products and skin oils, which can cause blockages and impurities. Unfortunately, water alone cannot completely remove these substances.
What is the best way to cleanse your skin?
Before cleaning your face, it is best to wash your hands first. This way, you won't bring bacteria from your hands to your face. Therefore, also use a clean towel to dry your skin.
A careful cleansing consists of two steps:
1. Washing your face with a milk or wash gel. This is the actual cleansing.
2. After washing, finish with a toner or tonic. This causes pores to constrict after cleansing and removes excess dirt left behind after using the milk or gel.
Peeling and facial mask
In addition to daily cleansing, you can use a facial peeling once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells. This will give you a more even skin complexion and offers the skin a deeper cleanse. As the skin recovers at night, it is best to use the peeling before bedtime. If you have oily and firm skin, then using a peeling twice a week is recommended, otherwise once a week is sufficient.
After exfoliation, you can apply a face mask as extra care. A mask works more effectively after using a peeling, as the pores can then absorb the active ingredients better.
Always cleanse your skin before going to bed
Especially if you use make-up, it is important to cleanse your skin every night. If you don't, you risk clogged pores and your skin cannot perform its repairing work optimally.
To completely remove your eye make-up (especially mascara), it is better not to rub extra hard as you will damage the delicate skin around the eyes and your lashes. Instead, take a cotton ball, soak it with the make-up remover and place it on your eyes for a few seconds. Then move the cotton ball back and forth to remove the last remnants.
Next, use a wash gel or milk to cleanse your whole face and finish with a toner/tonic.
Cleansing wipes
Face wipes are like ready-made meals for the face: convenient and quick, but not for every day. Use them when travelling or when you have little time, but make it a standard ritual to carefully cleanse your face in the morning and evening and care for it with a cream.
Hot or cold?
The skin on your face is much more sensitive than the skin on the rest of your body. Washing with hot water can cause irritation and redness and damage the skin's natural protective layer. Therefore, prefer to use lukewarm or cold water when washing your face.
